With Everton closing in on the return of Idrissa Gueye, Nottingham Forest need to look elsewhere to bolster their midfield.

The signing of Orel Mangala certainly has helped in that regard, but they still want someone defensive minded, like the Senegalese.

However, Steve Cooper’s side look set to miss out on him, meaning new targets are being looked at, including Cheikhou Kouyaté.

The defensive midfielder is without a club after his contrat at Crystal Palace ran out, but he could remain in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest.

That’s what Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna is reporting on Monday, taking to Twitter to report that ‘following the failure in the Gueye dossier, Nottingham Forest could turn to Cheikhou Kouyaté’.

They aren’t the only ones interested, however, as ‘Turkish clubs are also interested’.

We’ll now have to see how keen Nottingham Forest really are in Kouyaté, and if they are, whether a stay in England following eight years with West Ham United and Palace is what the player wants.

After all, following 258 Premier League appearances, there’s every chance he might want to try something new.
