Recruiting Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin, Nottingham Forest have the striker they wanted for their return to the Premier League.
The Nigeria international is widely expected to be the starter at City Ground going forward, meaning players like Nuno Da Costa, already out on loan last season, aren’t going to stand much of a chance.
That’s why Stade Malherbe de Caen in Ligue 2 are considering making a move for the Cape Verde international.
He was already there on loan last year, where he scored 10 goals and assisted another four in 26 games; enough to make them think about a permanent transfer.
This is what Ouest-France are reporting on Wednesday, claiming he could be the last piece of the puzzle for the Ligue 2 club.
However, ‘the case of the striker belonging to Nottingham Forest (until 2023) is complicated to unravel, especially financially, but remains on the table’.
As things stand, Da Costa is ‘waiting to resume with Forest to clearly see the club’s intentions towards him’.
It’s believed that, likely due to the arrival of Awoniyi, ‘the tendency is rather to a departure’, as ‘the English club don’t seem to count on him’.
While they wait for an answer, Caen are ‘exploring other avenues’, but it seems that following the successful spell last season, the Nottingham Forest man would be their favourite option.
Perhaps, with new Premier League money and just a year left on the striker’s deal, Forest could do everyone a favour and terminate the contract early?
