Matty Cash continues to be linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, although it’s repeatedly made clear he’s not the Spanish side’s only option for the right back position.

The 24-year-old has a contract with Aston Villa which runs until June 2024, and there’s little reason for Steven Gerrard’s side to part ways with him other than for a big transfer fee.

That’s is beginning to be recognised at Atletico Madrid and in the media close to the club. Monday’s edition of Marca reports that whilst Cash is a target, the transfer is ‘not cheap at all’.

Taking a regular player away from a Premier League side will usually be expensive, even if Marca send Aston Villa a little dig by saying the club is ‘far from being part of the English aristocracy’.

Maybe they’ve forgotten about the European Cup in Villa’s trophy cabinet, a trophy Atletico Madrid are yet to win.

Anyway, another option is Sergi Roberto. Seeing himself mainly as a midfielder, the 30-year-old can also play at right back, and has a Barcelona contract expiring in the summer.

If it gets to the point that Aston Villa share their asking price with Atletico, that could be when the idea of the Cash deal starts to die.
