After spending a decade working and living in the same city, it definitely shouldn’t be easy to adapt to a new life when time comes.

That’s what happened to Lucas Leiva last summer, when the Brazilian had to end his time at Liverpool FC and moved to Italy, where an offer from Lazio attracted him and won the big competition with Turkish and Brazilian clubs.

Now after eight months at the Serie A side, the midfielder claims to be happy with the option he took, as playing regularly for a big club was all he needed at this point of his career.

Leiva was interviewed by Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte this week, and besides commenting on his first season with Lazio, he also had a lot to say about the departure from the Anfield side.

Speaking of the choice to sign for Lazio, Leiva told Globo Esporte: “This first season has been very positive. In my first official game, I ended up participating in the title conquest. It’s been a good year so far for me, I hope it continues through the season. This season has shown me that it was the right time for me to leave Liverpool, especially for the time I spent there. I went out the front door. It’s a club that I’ll be grateful for forever, but it’s time for a new challenge.”

And regarding the farewell to Liverpool, he claims the decision was the best for both sides: “I believe that from the moment I ended up not being used the way I wanted to, I saw that my role within the club was going to be more off the pitch than on, and I was not yet ready for it. I do not see it as a breakup, as I still have contact with everyone at Liverpool. The fans honored me.

“I think it was a good time for both of us. It was good for them to have other players. Having a renovation, Klopp has changed a lot. And I need a new challenge, a new city, a new culture. And play more too, something I really wanted. Of course the feeling of leaving is never only positive, because it was 10 years of life there, but I did not leave with a feeling of breakup.”
