There’s been a couple of contradicting reports about Southampton’s interest in David Okereke, and, unfortunately, they’ve come from the same source.

Over the weekend, Gazzetta dello Sport claimed the Saints had made a €10m + €5m offer for the Spezia forward, who impressed greatly in Serie B last season.

There was no indication of whether this bid would be successful or not, and no new updates appeared in subsequent publications of the newspaper.

Just before this, BBC Radio Solent’s Sports Editor, Adam Blackmore, tweeted that ‘contrary to reports, Saints have not had any contact’ with Spezia over Okereke.

It was all a bit confusing, but it appears that Gazzetta dello Sport have now backtracked a little bit, explaining that as well as Sassuolo, who are trying to make a move for the Nigerian forward, Brescia, Southampton and Genk are ‘at the window’.

That means they are keeping an eye on his situation, perhaps trying to work out whether or not to make an offer.

This would fall in line with Blackmore’s claim that Okereke could be ‘one to watch maybe…’ this transfer window for Southampton, as the Premier League club monitor all options in front of them.

Either way, the interest appears to be there, but that reported offer seems to have magically disappeared.

What makes it even stranger is that both articles were written by the same collaboration of journalists: Luca Pessina and Alessandro Russo.

Maybe they just got ahead of themselves?
