On Wednesday, we covered claims from Italy of Newcastle United interest in Jordan Veretout.

It was reported the AS Roma midfielder is ‘destined to leave’ the Serie A club in the summer, and that the Magpies have appeared with interest.

Jose Mourinho is thought to have decided he won’t count on the former Aston Villa player next season, and therefore a move is closing in. A possible transfer fee was put at around €20m, for a player who has a contract lasting until June 2024.

Thursday’s Rome edition of Correire dello Sport backs up those claims and says the 29-year-old has interest from AC Milan, and from ‘above all Newcastle’. The €20m figure is again pushed forward as the amount Roma would be looking for in the next market.

This would all be rather fortunate for Veretout.

Newcastle United are at the start of a new era, and it’s likely they’ll be aiming their sights higher than a player Roma don’t see a future with.

It’s possible they could be interested in taking Veretout as a squad option, and the situation should become clearer in the coming months.
