On December 18th, Calciomercato.it reported Newcastle United have a keen interest in signing Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips in the winter market.

The midfielder has also been linked with a move to Juventus, who are looking to bring in a player in the same position next month.

Gazzetta dello Sport state the Serie A side will face ‘increasingly strong’ competition from Newcastle and their aim is to take him away from Manchester City on a loan deal.

This is backed up by journalist Alfredo Pedullà, who then provides more updates on the Magpies’ efforts to sign the 28-year-old.

The England international has struggled for regular minutes since he arrived at the Etihad from Leeds United in 2022. He’s been restricted to 10 games this season and that includes four substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Phillips needs to play regularly to improve his chances of representing England at the Euros next summer and is looking for a suitable club.

It could be Newcastle, who are looking for a midfielder after losing Sandro Tonali for the rest of the season due to suspension.

Manchester City, for their part, are open to letting the player leave on a loan deal and this formula pleases Eddie Howe’s side.

Pedullà says Newcastle are ‘increasing the pressure and hope to reach an agreement’ to bring Phillips to the Tyneside club in January.
