On Saturday we covered a report from O Jogo which stated Newcastle United were putting their offer for Andreas Samaris in writing and making things official.

The Portuguese newspaper explained that after work had been carried out by intermediaries to build the bones of a January transfer, the Magpies were set to make things more concrete.

Samaris would be moving to Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season and Benfica would receive a €500K fee. Should the Greek midfielder impress, the Premier League club would then have the option to invoke a three year contract in the summer, when his contract with the Lisbon club expires.

Benfica would be entitled to 50% of any future transfer fee.

Sunday’s edition of A Bola says Samaris could leave ‘in the next few days’ as the club look to get some money rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Newcastle is the clearest destination right now, but A Bola don’t present it as a done deal or something which is close to being so.

Crucially, it’s not explained what the player thinks of the offer and he’d likely want some more commitment from Newcastle, given the danger of ending up without a club in the summer.
