Newcastle United’s interest in Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi is now backed up by the German media.

That’s a chase which was initially reported by the UK press, with claims saying Eddie Howe’s side would like to sign the 24-year-old in the summer window.

Even though reports from Germany then claimed Awoniyi could indeed be sold by Union Berlin in the next market, there was never much to back up that Newcastle were chasing the player, at least until now.

Journalist Christian Falk comes up to say the Magpies are one of the Premier League clubs who are ‘interested’ in the striker, pointing out that he has a release clause worth €20m.

It’s interesting that in Bild’s previous report, it had been claimed that Union Berlin were expecting to make €30m with the sale, with even their former coach Christian Beeck mentioning that amount.

So if he really has a release clause of €20m, that’s a pretty good sign for Newcastle to hurry up and get their man before someone else does.
