When Maximilian Wöber decided to swap RB Salzburg for Leeds United in the January transfer window, he went from a team fighting for titles every year to one currently in a relegation battle.

Now managed by Javi Gracia, the Elland Road side sit 14th in the Premier League, but are just two points ahead of 18th placed West Ham United, who have a game in hand on them.

That means Leeds are far from being safe, and that’s a situation Wöber has never faced as a football player, which he discussed in an interview with Kurier in Austria.

He said: “I’ve never had that in my career. It’s a different feeling than going onto the pitch with Salzburg as number one. You can tell [the pressure] in the stadium. Of course I’d prefer to be comfortable 7th or 8th, but you go into duels regardless of the losses.”

Capable of playing at both left-back and centre-back, the 25-year-old has mostly featured through the middle for Leeds since his arrival, but he insists he isn’t bothered where his manager puts him.

He added: “I don’t care at all, the main thing is that I play. I was also brought on from Leeds as a left-back, now I play in the centre.”

Since joining Leeds, he has made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Whites, 10 of which have come in the Premier League, with the other three in the FA Cup, although he wasn’t in the squad for the 2-0 loss to Fulham late last month.
