Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong is attracting a lot of interest from clubs across Europe and one among them is Barcelona.
Earlier reports mentioned the La Liga winners have cooled their interest after the player suggested he will continue with the Dutch club next season. Today’s edition of Mundo Deportivo claims Ernesto Valverde’s side have not given up on the 21-year-old.
On Wednesday, De Jong’s agent Ali Dursun travelled to Barcelona in order to hold talks with the Catalan club’s officials. Mundo claims they have been informed by sources close to the Ajax midfielder about his representative’s trip to the Catalan capital.
The Catalan newspaper contacted Dursun for a comment, but De Jong’s agent refused to provide any update. The publication also approached Barcelona, but the Spanish champions also decided not to comment.
Ajax are aware of Barcelona’s intentions when it comes to De Jong, which is to block his transfer for the future. Former Barcelona technical secretary Robert Fernandez has already held talks for months with the Eredivisie side’s sporting director, Marc Overmars, regarding the midfielder.
The Camp Nou outfit have now asked expert agent Rob Jansen to help them negotiate with Ajax for De Jong. It’s thought the Dutch club are more likely to sell Matthijs de Ligt than the midfielder this summer.
Barcelona remain hopeful that they can agree a deal with Ajax and allow the player to continue his development with his current employers for one more season.
De Jong also ‘wants to play’ for Barcelona and the report claims they are the only club who have been chasing him for a while. However, he doesn’t want to push for a the deal and upset Ajax in the process.
