Manchester United were one of the many clubs who attended Benfica’s Champions League clash against Dinamo Kiev last night.

Despite the long list of guests, Manchester United are one of the few who have their target identified by A Bola. The Portuguese newspaper claims Jose Mourinho’s club were watching forward Gonçalo Guedes, just like La Liga side Valencia.

Guedes had an average match in Benfica’s 1-0 win, creating a few chances and putting some pressure on Dinamo’s defence. He ended up being subbed off after 87 minutes.

The 19-year-old has been linked to Manchester United for a long time, but the rumours never mentioned an offer or even a contact. It seems the club are simply keeping an eye on the striker, given he’s a good prospect.

During the pre-match press conference on Monday, Guedes was asked about the recent news regarding Valencia’s interest and said: “I really don’t think about leaving in January. I’m focused on Benfica, it’s the club of my heart, where I really like to play and want to continue.”

CapturarWith the player having a €60m release clause, it’s quite unlikely Benfica will make it easy for him to leave for much less than that. Whilst the player’s words may initially appear discouraging to Manchester United and others interested, players very often have a change of heart when a huge opportunity is presented to them.

Jose Mourinho knows the Portuguese market well, and Manchester United have continued scouting Benfica matches since his arrival. The manager’s insight on the Portuguese market, and of course Jorge Mendes, who just so happens to represent Guedes, would help any potential deal.

Manchester United have been repeatedly linked to Guedes this season by the Portuguese media, with claims they’ve been returning repeatedly for the €60m priced player.
