A couple of weeks ago, Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport claimed Manchester United had started outline talks over potentially signing Lorenzo Pellegrini from AS Roma.

They hadn’t contacted the club, that often seems the last step these days, but had instead telephoned the player’s agent and tried to find out about details on the release clause in his contract.

Pellegrini only signed for Roma in the summer, has a long contract, and a clause could make a move cheaper. Manchester United know there’s a €30m clause, and Corriere dello Sport claim they also wanted to learn the conditions of activating it.

At the time the problem for Manchester United was explained as Pellegrini’s desire to stay at Roma, and his affection towards the club. The young Italian midfielder is keen to stay in Italy this season to secure a place in the country’s World Cup squad.

Now TMW claim a Manchester United official was spotted at Roma’s match with AC Milan at the weekend, with Pellegrini being the reason for the trip.

However, TMW also say the clause is actually €25m, a little cheaper than the original claims.
