Manchester City fans will be well aware of, and rightly irritated by, Bayern Munich repeatedly coming out this summer and talking about signing Leroy Sane.

And then, all of a sudden, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge seemed to change his tune. Rather than back Niko Kovac’s statements about being confident with regards to signing Sane, the Bayern chief criticised his manager.

Kovac was forced to apologise to Pep Guardiola and also say sorry to Manchester City, and it all felt a little strange given everything which had gone before.

Kicker now bring what sounds like an explanation for it.

They report Manchester City sent an official warning letter to Bayern Munich two weeks ago, telling them to stop speaking about a Sane transfer so publicly. Either Kovac wasn’t told, or didn’t pay any attention, one would believe the former to be the likelier scenario.

This is all why Rummenigge was so publicly critical of Kovac’s comments and why the manger had to go public and admit he’d done wrong.
