Of all the Premier League clubs repeatedly linked with a move for Dries Mertens, Manchester City haven’t really been among them.

Chelsea have been the club linked the most regularly, and there’s usually an Italian article on Blues interest every day of the week. Mertens’ contract with Napoli expires at the end of the season, and despite a renewal seeming agreed at one stage, everything is still up in the air.

Il Mattino on Sunday, via AreaNapoli, report Manchester City have ‘come forward’ for Mertens, putting themselves in the picture to sign him this summer. It would be a surprise move for Pep Guardiola to sign the 33 year old, but perhaps City see something in his versatility.

Italian reports have been stating that Mertens would be leaning towards staying at Napoli, as long as a few issues can be sorted out. He’s happy at the club and his family are very happy with their lifestyle and house overlooking the sea.

Manchester City, and the chance to play for Guardiola, would obviously be a temptation, though, so if the claims are true it would be interesting to see whether Mertens’ love for Naples would wobble.
