In 2009, AS Roma sold Alberto Aquilani to Liverpool, in a deal which boosted the club’s finances. The Italian side will potentially face financial problems again this summer, which could see the Reds pick up a relative bargain, and break Roman hearts again.

Roma are going through a takeover process which has hit several bumps in the road, and as it stands they’re set to miss out on Champions League football next season, which would be a serious financial blow.

Several Italian newspapers report on Sunday that sales will likely be needed in such a scenario, with Nicolo Zaniolo the obvious option and potentially Roma’s most valuable player.

Juventus are keen on the midfielder, but aren’t the only ones. Il Tempo say that before football was halted due to the Covid-19 crisis, Liverpool had ‘taken a few steps’ towards signing the player.

It’s made clear there’s nothing serious at this stage, and that whilst Jurgen Klopp doesn’t see Zaniolo as a priority, he does have him on a list of potential signings.

Il Tempo say the player was valued at €80m before the current crisis, with the suggestion that price may drop.

Liverpool could solve Roma’s financial problems, however, the newspaper makes clear it would be at the risk of ‘infuriating’ the Italian club’s fans, with there still being annoyance both Mohamed Salah and Alisson were lost to the Reds.
