It’s been a month since Pep Guardiola called Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes one of the ‘best in the world’, and despite his strong words, there hadn’t been any information on Manchester City’s pursuit for the midfielder.

Due to a suspension, the 23-year-old didn’t even travel to England for the second leg of the Champions League’s round-of-16, which gave no chances for new rumours on his future.

However, in a new story from newspaper Record, it’s now claimed that the clubs actually spoke about Matheus Nunes in a lunch between officials last week.

It’s said Sporting’s Frederico Varandas and Hugo Viana had a meal with Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain at Pep Guardiola’s restaurant Tast Catala. There, among many subjects, they had an ‘informal’ mention to the midfielder.

Even though it’s not clear if Manchester City would go for his signing in the next summer, Record points out that due to the partnership between the clubs, the Premier League side could have some kind of preference for the player.

Now in a press conference, manager Ruben Amorim was asked about that story, and therefore Manchester City’s interest, but didn’t want to get too involved with it.

“That’s like the other players, it’s a part of Hugo Viana and the president. I know there have already been proposals, even in January, it’s part of our daily life, it’s a good sign,” said Amorim.

“Obviously, the Champions League showcase has greatly increased the greed of players. I’m going to play my role, which is to have a better team, bringing young players to join the team, that’s my role, Viana’s and the president’s role is to deal with these situations. So I have no idea of the situation of Matheus or any other player.”
