Sporting director Max Eberl is more likely to end up at Bayern Munich than Liverpool, despite the Reds having a longstanding interest in him.

That’s according to Sky Sports Germany, who say a potential move to Anfield is “not really hot at the moment”.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Eberl over the last two weeks, with him currently out of work after leaving RB Leipzig in September.

The expectation had been that he would end up at Bayern, who are also undergoing a restructuring behind the scenes, but they are yet to push forward to secure his signature.

That’s seen potential links to Liverpool resurface, with it reported recently that talks had even been held with Reds chief Billy Hogan last year, albeit on a very informal basis.

Either way, it was believed that Liverpool were looking into a potential move as current director of football Jorg Schmadtke’s contract comes to an end in January.

It’s yet to be seen whether his stay at the club, which they have admitted consistently is a short-term one for now, is extended and if it isn’t, a move for Eberl would make sense.

It seems that is something which isn’t being explored heavily at this moment in time, though, at least according to Sky’s latest information.

“It’s not really hot at the moment. What I can tell you is that we know Liverpool actually wanted to hire Max Eberl after he left Borussia Monchengladbach,” their reporter said during a segment from Philadelphia.

“There was contact, there were discussions and there was really hot interest. However, Max Eberl cancelled at the time.

“Now the situation is that Eberl is basically waiting for Bayern to go full throttle, he wants to go to Bayern. He is in top shape and wants to bring his expertise to them, but Bayern are not quite moving yet.

“They want to let the grass grow and make an internal decision in December on whether to bring someone in as sporting director or postpone things.

“The fact is, though, that Max Eberl won’t wait months for Bayern so it can’t be ruled out that Liverpool will get involved again because Jorg Schmadtke’s future is open.

“He would be employed as sports director until around January and there is no clear sign what will happen next. So, Liverpool and Eberl is something we’ll keep an eye on, but it’s more likely that he moves to Bayern.”
