Liverpool have initiated contact with Benfica over potentially signing Francisco Reis Ferreira, reports Saturday’s edition of Record.

Better known as Ferro, the 21 year old central defender is being used between Benfica’s first and second teams at the moment, and the Portuguese media believe he’s a player who could be very important in the future.

According to the claims, Jurgen Klopp’s club have been keen for some time. It’s claimed that just under two years ago, Liverpool made a formal offer to sign the player.

They wanted an initial loan with a buying option of €10m, which the Reds would have used had the youngster impressed. Benfica knocked it back, unwilling to sell the defender.

Liverpool have now asked the conditions for a summer signing, but the Lisbon club have again knocked the Premier League side back.

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund are also said to be interested, and any club making a move will find it hard to complete the deal.

Ferro recently extended his contract, and the new deal, which lasts until June 2023, has a €100m release clause.
