We’ve been ignoring Gazzetta di Modena and their Jerry Mbakogu claims for a couple of days because it was bound to be more of the same.

As far as Carpi’s local media had been informed, there had been a new verbal agreement made between the Serie B side and Leeds over a transfer. The agreement was at a lower price than the original buying option and had to be activated before the end of July.

For a while there’s been a confidence surrounding Carpi that a deal could be done because of personal assurances said to have been received from people close to Leeds United. At one point it was claimed there was confidence in a move because it had only been Italians talking around the table, there was a feeling Leeds wouldn’t let them down.

Now it’s August 1st and even Gazzetta di Modena sound like they’ve give up. In their Wednesday edition it’s stated that it’s clear, despite all the previous hopes and claimed verbal agreements, that Leeds aren’t using that option.

Carpi now have to ‘change all strategy’ and owner Stefano Bonacini will hold a series of meetings to work out what they’re going to do with the striker.

In slightly different circumstances it would be possible to feel a little sorry for Carpi and Mbakogu, but it’s been apparent for some time that Leeds have been holding the deal off.

Any new verbal agreement was likely only made so the potential transfer could be pushed away, it was giving the hint without snatching all hope away.

Carpi and the player should have gone down other routes before now and whilst the Modena media may feel Leeds have taken everyone on a ride, there’s certainly been some naivety at the Italian club.

That should be it now, unless Carpi try to tempt Leeds back with yet another drop in price.
