Leeds United defender Potnus Jansson has reconfirmed Aston Villa tried to sign him when he was a youngster. Back in 2007 the Sweden international revealed a number of English clubs were watching him, including the West Midlands side.

In an interview with Fotbollskanalen during the last international break Jansson said Aston Villa were showing an interest in him before he signed his professional contract with Malmo following comments he made as a youngster.

Jansson first revealed Aston Villa’s interest to sign him in 2007 when he was just 16 years old. At the time the Swede said a number of English clubs were tracking him, but it was Aston Villa who were showing the most interest.

Jansson confirmed Aston Villa did contact him, but in the end he took the decision to remain with Malmo,

The defender said in 2007: “I am aware that officials from Arsenal, Tottenham, Feyenoord and Aston Villa are looking at me, but I do not know if they are all interested in recruiting me.  We will hear from Aston Villa in the coming days again so that we can discuss it further. This is obviously a big chance for me,” said the defender.

Jansson has been a revelation since signing for Leeds United from Torino in the summer, and has been a key player for Garry Monk’s side in recent weeks. The 25-year-old has joined the Championship side initially on loan, but if he plays twenty games this season the move will become permanent.
