As the agent of Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz was today interviewed by AS, we get to see many details of the transfer which took him to Juventus.

The 21-year-old is loaned to the Old Lady until the end of the season, with them having a €49.5m buying option over him.

Sebastian Lopez pointed out that since Alcaraz wasn’t being a regular starter at Southampton, all parties thought it was best for him to leave.

A few Premier League sides were interested in his signing, but that’s when Juventus showed up and ended up finding a very quick agreement with the Saints.

The agent claims that he was actually initially surprised that the Bianconeri accepted some of the conditions imposed by Southampton.

“Yes, in the middle I get a call from Juventus. This was a Monday, I meet with Southampton and we establish a little bit what the exit conditions are. On Monday night, I get Juventus on the phone, which even I was incredulous about. So, with all that reservation, I told Charly: ‘Look, Juventus fell for it. They promised to send an official offer tomorrow and then we’ll know’. The next day, at 08:30 in the morning, I had an official offer from Juventus on my mobile phone. In one day, we got the deal done,” Lopez told AS.

“They had a loan of about €1.5m plus a penalty. Southampton were very keen that where he goes on loan there had to be a penalty if the player didn’t play. They looked for a clause where they tie in that the guy has to play. They created this penalty if the player plays less than 30% of the minutes, but it decreases to the point where the penalty is zero if he plays more than 60%.”

It turns out that Alcaraz only has four appearances for Juventus so far, and it makes it unlikely that the club will spend all that amount to sign him permanently, especially with him injured at this moment in time.

That’s why AS also asked if there’s a chance Southampton can make a discount on the buying clause, and the agent sounds positive about that.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I think he’s going to generate the move.”
