Manchester United outcast Bastian Schweinsteiger has been linked with a move to the MLS in January, after the 32-year-old made it clear he doesn’t want to sign for another European club.
Matthaus insists the MLS has changed, and they no longer just go after the big names. He told Bild: “The time has changed from when the MLS signed only wanted big names. That isn’t any longer sufficient.
“Also, in the US professional league it is expected today that players can also take the team forward.”
Matthaus also claims the penalty conceded by Schweinsteiger during Germany’s semi-final match against France at the Euros won’t leave a good impression: “Schweinsteiger’s last 16 months played at Manchester United are no longer relevant. In addition, the penalty he conceded at the Euros against France will also not leave a good last impression.”
Germany and Bayern Munich legend Matthaus is well known for being harsh when judging others, and should Schweinsteiger be keen on the MLS, he shouldn’t have too many problems finding a club.
