Earlier this week, Portuguese newspaper A Bola highlighted Newcastle United’s chase for Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande, claiming that the Magpies have been pushing ahead of others in the race for the centre-back.

This has been a quite busy week for the Lions, as with the English interest in Ruben Amorim, their president Frederico Varandas is trying to come up with a plan to convince the manager to stay at the club for another season.

Now as A Bola shares a fresh story on that scenario, there’s actually good news for Newcastle, as Sporting seem to have decided to sell Diomande.

It’s claimed that Varandas picked Viktor Gyokeres and Gonçalo Inácio as the stars who should be kept above all others, while the Magpies’ target, as well as Marcus Edwards, can be sold.

Regarding Diomande, the newspaper writes that Newcastle are ‘leading the way’ for him, as they ‘even started exploratory contacts’.

Now despite highlighting his ‘meteoric rise’ and his €80m release clause, A Bola doesn’t say how much Sporting will really demand for the transfer. If they choose him to go, they’ll likely make a discount on that amount, but will still surely try to make as much as possible.

Whilst this one has always seemed a long shot for Newcastle United, perhaps there’s now some hope.
