Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has insisted he is aware of the pressure on him wearing the number 10 shirt at Liverpool and is determined to prove he is worthy of it.

The Argentine World Cup winner has been speaking to ESPN regarding his move to Liverpool this summer and his decision to take up the iconic shirt at Anfield.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool in a €42m deal from Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this summer, with the Reds moving quickly to secure his signature as part of their rebuild of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

The midfielder arrives with a big reputation following his three years at Brighton, where he established himself as a Premier League regular and broke into the Argentine national team, where he was a key player for them in their success in the Qatar World Cup.

The decision to take up the number 10 shirt was a surprising one given it has usually been reserved for more attacking players at Liverpool down the years.

Sadio Mane was the last holder of the shirt, and arguably the most successful, but was preceded by the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Michael Owen and John Barnes is donning the number.

That means there is big history in the shirt, something Mac Allister is more than aware of and determined to live up to.

“For me it is a great pride to wear Liverpool’s 10,” he said.

“I am very aware of what it means and that there has not been an Argentine in the club for a long time.

“And I am looking forward to being able to demonstrate, to be able to help the team to go well, that it will be a great season and show that I am capable of wearing Liverpool’s 10.”
