KRC Genk ‘refuse to give up’ on a move for Southampton striker Paul Onuachu, who is keen on the return to his former club.

That’s according to Het Laatste Nieuws, relayed by Voetbal Nieuws, who say the Belgian club will continue to pursue a deal despite a swap deal including Joseph Paintsil is now off the cards.

Paintsil has made it clear he doesn’t want the move to Southampton this summer, insisting his focus is on Genk in public comments that have put an end to the negotiations on that front.

That, though, does not mean the Limburgers will ‘simply stop the negotiations’ with the Championship team and they’re still focused on getting Onuachu back.

Director of football Dimitri de Condé ‘would still bet’ on the striker, who has also ‘set his sights’ on getting back to his former club.

That is easier said than done after Southampton paid them €18m in January, an amount that they want to recover as much of as possible. That doesn’t suit Genk, who were already trying to use Paintsil to bring the price down.

The question now is whether they want to use one of their other star players in a deal for Onuachu or try to work something out.

The alternative is waiting on the deal and letting the transfer window head towards it’s conclusion in the hope that makes Southampton desperate enough to reduce their asking price or sanction a loan deal.
