The Spanish media continues to present Newcastle United as the main contenders for the signing of Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga.

Today, it’s SER Deportivos journalist Pcokó Delgado (via Fichajes) who claims that the Magpies ‘will burn their ships’ for this signing.

It’s said that Newcastle ‘intend to pay’ the €40m of the player’s release clause, and that places the club ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race.

Fichajes claim the La Liga giants ‘have been surpassed’ by the Magpies, who are willing to ‘put the meat on the grill’ and make the transfer happen.

We must just point out that in the past few days, journalists close to Newcastle United have been denying that the club are interested in Veiga.

Despite several reports from Spain claiming this chase has been ongoing for a while, it was said the Magpies actually have other targets for the summer window.

If paying the release clause, Newcastle wouldn’t need to negotiate with Celta Vigo, so we should soon get to know whether it’s the Spanish or English media who’s right about that.
