Napoli have now ‘taken the lead’ from Everton in the race for Lille central defender Gabriel Magalhães.

That’s according to France Football, who say the Italians are pushing hard to secure the Brazilian’s signature for Gennaro Gattuso.

Gabriel has been heavily linked with a move to Goodison Park for several months, with the Blues thought to be keen to add a central defender to their squad this summer.

It was widely believed they were at the front of the queue for him and had all but tied up a deal, only for the player to delay as he waited to see what other options were available.

That may have arrived in the form of Napoli, who have ‘taken the lead in the matter’ according to France Football.

They report that Gattuso has ‘firmly shown his desire’ to take the player to Naples in a deal worth around €25m.

Their belief is that the Serie A side are now leading the race, although Everton ‘still have their chances’ in regards to the deal.

This is backed up by Corriere Dello Sport, who say Napoli are looking at the Brazilian as a replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly.

They confirm that Everton are also interested and ‘could enter in competition’ with Napoli for his signature.
