Until breaking through at Sporting CP by scoring 57 goals in 111 appearances, no one in Europe really knew who Islam Slimani was.

Bought from CR Belouizdad in Algeria, the striker didn’t take long to adapt to and make his mark on football on this side of the world, leading to his transfer to Leicester City three years later for around £27m.

Originally meant to be the star striker next to Jamie Vardy under Claudio Ranieri, the forward didn’t have the desired impact, and when the Italian manager was moved on, things became a bit more difficult.

Unsuccessful loans to Newcastle and Fenerbahçe were organised, but it was thankfully third time lucky for the 31-year-old as a move to AS Monaco allowed him to regain some status and get his career back on track.

Now edging towards the end of his deal at Leicester City (it expires in 2021), Slimani has a lot to think about when it comes to his future, namely where he wants to go next.

With few years left at the top level, this could be the opportune time to return to Sporting CP, who would likely gladly welcome him back with open arms.

It’s a scenario which, according to the player himself, he would be keen to give a go.

Speaking to Le Score, he said: “Why not? Sporing is a club that has a big place in my heart, just like CR Belouizdad, or the others clubs where I started, Aïn Benian and Chéraga. To be honest, ever since I left Sporting, I’ve always had it in my head that I’d return to that club, which left its mark on me. When exactly? I don’t know. Once again, everything is linked to Mektoub (God’s chosen destiny)”.
