With a goal on his England debut against Wales last night, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin only further added to the belief that this could be his year to shine.

The Blues striker has started the season on fire, and his expertly taken header was a testament to his continued improvement.

It’s been a slow burn for Calvert-Lewin, who has enjoyed steady improvement over the last few years to help him reach this point.

The arrival of Carlo Ancelotti as Everton manager has clearly played a significant role, with the Italian coach turning the striker from a prospect into a genuine, quality striker during his short time in charge.

According to Mundo Deportivo, though, it is not only the Italian that should be getting praise for Calvert-Lewin’s hot streak. No, they believe current Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is due something.

They say the Dutch coach left ‘very good memories’ in the Premier League, ‘at Everton in particular’, which Blues fans will heartily disagree with we’re sure.

Anyway, one of those good things was Calvert-Lewin, who he started at right-wing back in the league opener with Stoke City back in 2017.

Now, this proved to be an unmitigated disaster and Mundo admit this, stating that the striker demonstrated that playing in the position was not his ‘forte’ and the performance left Everton fans with their head in their hands.

However, they argue that ‘seen over time’ the decision was a masterstroke as it’s good for coaches to get youngsters out of ‘their comfort zone’ and ‘into the game’.

We’re not quite sure Everton fans would agree with that, or anyone with a football brain to be honest, but you have to admire Mundo’s effort to shoehorn some praise for Koeman into anything they can nonetheless.
