Pablo Maffeo has revealed the time spent at Manchester City has helped him develop as a footballer.

The right-back came through the ranks of Espanyol’s youth system and left them for the English champions in 2013. He spent five years with the Citizens before leaving for VfB Stuttgart in 2018.

Maffeo returned to Spain on a permanent deal when RCD Mallorca signed him in the summer transfer window, a year after they initially took him on a loan deal.

The 25-year-old has given an interview to Catalan newspaper Sport, and was asked whether he regrets joining Manchester City at such an early stage of his career.

Responding to that, the Spaniard said: “I have never regretted going to City so young. I spent nine years at Espanyol. All decisions are to get something. Just like I never regretted going to Stuttgart.

“In Manchester, I was very good, but it is true that I left very young and I had a very bad time at the beginning. Going there made me become a footballer.”

During his spell at Manchester City, the fullback spent most of his time away on loan. Pep Guardiola gave him an opportunity to play for the Premier League winners in the coach’s debut season at the Etihad.

Maffeo made three appearances for City and all of them came during the 2016/17 season.

“I was lucky enough to debut and be with Guardiola. Leaving City is not the same as leaving a lower team, with all due respect. Leaving there you have more status,” he added.
