RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku finished the 2021/22 campaign with 35 goals and 20 assists in all competitions. His fine form attracted attention from several clubs, including Chelsea.

The west London club seem to have done more than just registering an interest in the forward, if a report from Bild is to be believed.

It’s claimed Chelsea carried out the 24-year-old’s medical tests ‘quite secretly’ towards the end of the last window.

This was not done in London, but with a doctor in Frankfurt, where the cardiological tests were completed. A Blues official accompanied the process. It’s suggested the Premier League side ‘probably wanted to avoid a big stir in England’.

These tests were conducted with a view to a potential transfer next summer, when the France international will be allowed to leave for €60m. Chelsea carried out the player’s tests when Thomas Tuchel’s was in charge at the club. He was sacked earlier this month.

Bild state it is rather unlikely the English club’s interest in Nkunku has ‘waned’ after the German’s exit. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, for his part, maintains ‘very good contacts’ with Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff after the sale of Timo Werner to the Bundesliga side.

Leipzig want to keep Nkunku beyond the winter market, but for next summer, ‘anything is possible’, especially since the attacker’s release clause will come into effect.
