Over the course of the January transfer window, Wolverhampton Wanderers were joined by Lyon in the pursuit of João Gomes.

The Brazilian midfielder had already given his word to Wolves regarding a transfer when the Ligue 1 side came swooping in, only to find the player wanting to stick to his guns and turning down the chance to head to France.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas touched on this a bit when interviewed by Olympique et Lyonnais this week, taking a sly dig at the Wolverhampton Wanderers signing in the process.

He said: “The manager validated the options and regretted those we weren’t able to get. For the number six role, we went with João Gomes, because John Textor asked us to, but I said it, it made us lose the chance to sign others. It wasn’t to hurt us.

“He chose Wolverhampton and as far as I know he doesn’t play much. We listen to people who are likely to give us good advice, but often the advisers are not the ones paying.”

It’s true that Gomes has yet to really feature regularly for Wolves since his arriving, making just four appearances for a small amount of 156 minutes, although he does already have one goal to his name.

Aulas seems to suggest he would have played more at Lyon, who were forced to sign Jeffinho from Botafogo instead, but it was the player’s choice, and he did what he felt was best for his career.

It’s now up to Gomes to convince Julen Lopetegui he deserves more time on the pitch.
