It’s now becoming the consensus in Portugal that Sporting are completing the purchase of Pedro Porro from Manchester City. Following the loan spell the fullback had in Lisbon, they are now spending €8.5m to sign him permanently.
Among the many stories about this subject, newspaper A Bola is probably the one bringing the most detailed report.
The outlet writes that the contract was actually signed in December 2021, as the player has already been receiving his new salary for months. Back then, not only did Sporting accept to pay for the pre-agreed fee, but Manchester City also managed to include a €20m buy-back clause in the deal.
The most interesting detail in the story is probably the information regarding the payment method. That’s because the Lions are set to pay in four instalments, one each year, until the end of the player’s contract in 2025. In case they sell him before that, then they need to settle it at once.
Porro’s potential departure from Sporting is also a subject, with A Bola claiming that the likes of Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich ‘seem to be on the front line’ to sign him. The Lions, however, don’t want to let him leave for less than €40m.
So given that Manchester City’s buy-back option is half of that, perhaps that’s why the Premier League side made it so easy for the Portuguese club to split the payment.
