Marc Wilmots has questioned whether Arsenal legend Thierry Henry should be continuing as a pundit on Sky Sports after being installed as a coach for Belgian. Wilmots was replaced in the summer by Roberto Martinez after exiting Euro 2016 at the quarter final stage.

Nieuwsblad have reported on comments Wilmots made in a documentary when asked about Henry’s role with Belgium. Wilmots believes you can’t be both a pundit and coach at the same time, which is something he’s always been against.

The former Belgium coach compared Henry’s situation to that of presidents of Belgian clubs being involved with the FA because there is a conflict of interest.

“You can’t work as a television commentator and work as a trainer for the national team. That’s pure amateurism. In Belgium I was against it.

“Should Bart Verhaeghe, president of Brugge and vice president of the Belgian FA, be involved? And Thierry Henry, analyst for Sky Sports and assistant coach?”

Last month it was announced Martinez would become Belgium’s new manager after Wilmots stepped down from the role. The former Everton manager appointed Graeme Jones as No.2, and also ex Arsenal star Thierry Henry as his second assistant coach.

Henry earns a far bigger wage from his punditry than he does from working for Belgium, which would perhaps make him less likely to give up the role.
