Borussia Dortmund were willing to offer as much as €29m for Leeds United striker Georginio Rutter this summer, but it still wouldn’t have been enough to secure his signature.

That’s according to Ruhr 24, relaying information from Sky Sports Germany, who say the Bundesliga side ‘wanted to sign’ the former TSG Hoffenheim striker.

Rutter joined Leeds in the January transfer window of this year in a €28m deal as they looked to bolster their forward options that month and avoid relegation.

He endured a difficult end to the season, though, barely featuring under Leeds succession of managers or make much of an impact as they were eventually relegated.

He was thus linked with a move away from Elland Road during the exodus this summer but eventually ended up staying as no offers that arrived satisfied Leeds.

A report at the end of the window made it clear that Dortmund had made a later bid and Sky Sports Germany cover that now.

They say that Dortmund ‘made an offer’ for the Leeds striker, which they say was set at just under €25m. That, though, was rejected by the Whites’ hierarchy.

They rejected the offer outright, deciding not to sell the Frenchman for a figure that was €3m lower than what they themselves had paid for him.

Sky state that Dortmund had been willing to go even higher, but it seems they never bothered and instead decided to sign Niclas Füllkrug from Werder Bremen instead.

That left Rutter at Leeds, where he has worked his way into Daniel Farke’s plans and has two goals and one assist in six league games so far.
