There’s actual excitement brewing in Italy regarding Matteo Darmian’s return to his home country, but not because his transfer to Juventus is close.

No, it’s because Napoli have entered the fray, elbowed everyone out of the way and slapped €18m on the table to acquire the Manchester United full-back’s services.

This is what Rai Sport’s Ciro Venerato is reporting on Wednesday, relayed by Calciomercato.it, which is about €5m more than what Juventus have offered.

While this is the more ‘advanced’ report, it isn’t the only one stating Napoli are serious competition for the Serie A champions, as both Tuttosport and Calciomercato (the .com version) also run stories.

Neither report a bid being made, but the pair explain Aurelio de Laurentiis and co. could take advantage of the stalemate currently in place between Manchester United and Juventus to swoop in and steal Darmian.

We’ll have to wait and see how this develops in the coming days, but this could certainly put some fizz back into what was becoming an increasingly boring saga.
