Borussia Monchengladbach are putting pressure on defender Nico Elvedi to make a decision about his future following his failure to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Gladbach Live, who say the German club want the player to sign a new deal with an agreed release clause to ensure he does not leave on a free transfer next summer.

They explain that Wolves ‘competed intensively’ for the Gladbach defender throughout the summer window but the deal ultimately did not take place.

That’s caused a problem for the Bundesliga side as his deal expires in 2024 and they now run the risk of losing him on a free as he’ll be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement from January onwards.

That issue is currently ‘hanging over everything’ as Gladbach don’t want him to join players like Marcus Thuram, Ramy Bensebaini and Matthias Ginter in leaving on a free.

Their preference would be for the defender to sign a new contract with an agreed release clause, something they did with former star Jonas Hofmann before he joined Bayer Leverkusen for €10m this summer.

Such a deal would be a win-win for all parties as Elvedi could get his move and Gladbach would secure a fee rather than losing him for nothing. It would also set up the likes of Wolves to get the player for an agreeable fee.

The problem is that Elvedi and Gladbach are yet to reach an agreement, which has led the club to put the pressure on and suggest that he could be left out of the team until an agreement is reached.

That would be catastrophic for the player given the European Championships are coming next year and he wants to be in Switzerland’s squad for it.

The race is therefore on for all parties to work things out but in the meantime, that failed Wolves move is causing plenty of problems.
