In the final weeks of the summer window, Brighton & Hove Albion were said to be making a strong effort to sign Fabricio Diaz from Uruguayan side Liverpool Montevideo, as they were ‘very close’ to a deal.
Even the player’s agent confirmed the Seagulls’ interest in the transfer, but Roberto De Zerbi’s side ended up missing out on the youngster.
It was journalist German Garcia Grova who reported the transfer, claiming Al-Gharafa are buying Diaz for US$6m, and he’s travelling to sign a five-year contract tomorrow.
AS recalls that the player had been chased by European clubs during the transfer window, especially after his performances in the U-20 World Cup, but none of them managed to get a deal agreed at the time.
The outlet points out how the Middle East clubs ‘can do more’ than many sides lately, and we now wonder why Brighton never showed they could pay US$6m to get Diaz signed.
Maybe that was the Uruguayan club trying to make more money, and with the European transfer closed, they accepted the sale to Al-Gharafa.
