Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro continue to work to keep Chelsea loanee Nathan for a longer period of time.
With the midfielder’s contract running out at the end of June, the clubs are now negotiating to extend it for six more months.
Atletico president Sérgio Sette Câmara has spoken to Globo Esporte at the weekend, confirming the talks.
“We will try to extend it before the end of the year. This is being discussed with Chelsea,” Câmada told Globo Esporte.
Câmara has also claimed that regardless of Chelsea’s wish to extend the contract, Nathan may stay at the club in case FIFA take a decision to postpone the expiry dates for all loan deals.
“It may be that there’s a rule of extension of the contract for a certain period that was the stoppage of football. This can happen, but there would have to be a FIFA rule in this regard. But I think that in the freezing of eggs, in the current situation, only if Chelsea had a proposal to sell Nathan. Otherwise, even to avoid having to assume this payment, they would renew with us until the end of the year.”
Atletico first signed Nathan on a loan deal from Chelsea in the summer of 2018. That first spell ended in January 2020, and the player even missed a few games during the negotiations for an extension, which was agreed for six more months.
This is the fourth club Nathan has a loan spell at, following his time at Vitesse, Amiens, and Belenenses. He was signed by the Blues in 2015.
