Everton and Mauricio Lemos refuses to go away. It’s likely the fault of Mundo Deportivo, with the Catalan newspaper dragging the story up again in mid May.

Mundo Deportivo were doing a preview of Barcelona’s match against Las Palmas, and took a look at Lemos because he’d previously been of interest to those in charge at the Camp Nou.

Everton were also linked, and we made a point of saying: ‘There’s every chance that Everton are linked for no other reason than they’ve been linked before.’

Despite that, within hours it was all over the English media and has popped up repeatedly since. This week, Sport says that Las Palmas are currently ‘handling’ an offer from Everton.

Ronald Koeman is said to want an ‘economic effort’ to sign the defender, pushing Everton to pay the money it will require. Back in May, Sport said Everton had ‘launched the first offer’ for Lemos, but it still didn’t feel very concrete.

And that’s the way things remain.

It’s hard to tell if Everton are being strongly linked with Lemos simply because they have been before, or whether there’s anything especially real in the latest claims.

The local Canary Island media, who have good connections to Las Palmas, don’t seem to think anything is especially serious or imminent.
