In what was a strange turn of events, as soon as the Saudi Arabian PIF had confirmed their takeover of Newcastle United, it was reported they would turn their attention to Inter next.

The Serie A club is currently owned by the Suning group, but their financial struggles suggested they could use some help, and a hefty buyout would have gone a long way to allow them to move on.

Multiple stories emerged on the subject, some claiming the deal was well on its way, while others staunchly refuted the claim, which is exactly what the club’s president, Steven Zhang, did on Thursday.

Speaking directly about Inter, the young businessman reaffirmed the desire of a long-term project at the Italian side, and dismissed speculation that the Newcastle owners would soon take over.

He said, relayed by Corriere della Sera: “During this year, there have been numerous voices that have surrounded the club and the commitment of the owners to Inter. None of these are true. All falsehoods and speculations.

“I reiterate that the ownership project, the support and the commitment are long-term, our vision for the future is clear and defined”.

That will hopefully put to bed stories of the Newcastle owners wanting to expand their portfolio, much like the City Group did, for the time being, but following the success the Manchester club have had by purchasing clubs around Europe, it would be surprising to see them make similar moves down the line.

For now, however, it appears they will fully focus on matters at St James’ Park and stabilise the Magpies before looking elsewhere.

And they certainly won’t be going for Inter.
