There’s no denying that the current number one goalkeeper at Aston Villa these days is Emiliano Martínez, but behind him, there is Robin Olsen.

The Swedish goalkeeper signed from AS Roma in the summer for €3.5m after a six month loan, and despite making just five appearances for the club this season, and conceding 13 goals in the process, he still has a spot as the starter in his national team.

Currently on international duty with his country, the 33-year-old had a chat with the media there, including Fotbollskanalen, where he was asked about his present, which involves Aston Villa, and future.

About his backup role at Villa Park, he made it clear that despite desiring a few more minutes than he currently has, he isn’t overly frustrated.

He said: “It’s clear that I want to play, but we enjoy ourselves in England. The family is doing well and I am doing well at Aston Villa. There is this thing about the playing time, but otherwise there is not much to complain about.

“We have been away for a few years now and we have moved around. We have two small children and a family to think about. The kids get older, go to school and have friends and all that. We have made a decision to keep the children here. It’s game time, but otherwise I enjoy the club very much. Seeing the children grow up there and go to school with their friends makes me happy.”

That being said, the player won’t stay at Aston Villa until the end of his career, and it’s clear he has a desire to return to his native Sweden at a later date.

When he does, he ‘wants to return to Malmö FF’, which he describes as his team, having grown up watching them.

Whether he achieves that remains to be seen, but that’s the aim, although, as he puts it: “It will probably take a few years, but I’m getting older.”
