Currently without the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Ange Postecoglou is juggling a number of delicate situations at Tottenham despite a very bright start to the season.
While that affects him now, he also has to contend with the likelihood that his Spurs squad will be without Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma during the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving him light in midfield.
That’s why seeing Tottenham linked with a potential signing in that area of the pitch isn’t overly surprising, as Il Romanista state that Bryan Cristante is of interest to the Premier League side.
Currently at AS Roma under José Mourinho, the 28-year-old is a key figure at his club, meaning they might not want to let him leave.
Add to that the fact he signed an extension in June of this year, and everything indicates he should be staying in Rome.
However, Il Romanista state that January should see Tottenham ‘try to give fresh forces’ to their manager, and Cristante is alleged to be among the players targeted.
Described as the ‘fulcrum’ of Mourinho’s current midfield, he is said to be an ‘irreplaceable element’ in the team, both on and off the pitch.
That’s why Roma ‘do not seem willing to deprive themselves of one of their key players’ midway through the campaign, but they add that an ‘offer that cannot be refused’ from Tottenham’s end could make them change their mind.
How much would that be? Il Romanista reckon that an offer ‘superior to €30m’ could make the Friedkin family consider a transfer.
Not only that, but they write that he would be perfect for Postecoglou, and this is one of the reasons (alongside a bigger paycheque) that the midfielder could ‘falter in the face’ of an offer from Tottenham.
