Sometimes, stories are hyped up beyond what they really are, but there can be no doubt that Mundo Deportivo’s claim of Liverpool offering €180m for Marco Asensio was huge.

It would smash all kinds of records and because of the size of the offer it felt a little hard to take in, but the Spanish newspaper were insistent, calling it a ‘formal offer’.

The claims came out three days ago and to make things as clear as possible, we stated: ‘Just to make this abundantly clear: Mundo Deportivo claim Liverpool have made a €180m offer for Marco Asensio.

The offer is ‘on the table’ at Real Madrid, and the Spanish club ‘will study it’.’

Asensio has since been getting on with his World Cup, managing 16 minutes off the bench against Morocco on Monday evening. Today the Real Madrid youngster has been at Spain’s press conference and was obviously asked about the transfer claims.

Quizzed on Liverpool interest, Marca quote the 22 year old as saying: “It’s out there, but I’m focused on the World Cup. When it’s over I’ll talk about that kind of thing, my head is in Russia.”

Asensio will probably be keen to know how important he’ll be for Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid next but an exit still seems unlikely. The player is considered one of the best talents in Spain and Madrid fans would be furious if the club sold him.
