Chelsea may be on the verge of confirming the signing of David Washington from Santos, but there’s apparently a little problem to be sorted out between the clubs.

As widely reported, it was AS Monaco who had preferential clause for the player. That was agreed just last month, when they negotiated the transfer of Jean Lucas with the Brazilian club.

The agreement was that Jean Lucas would be allowed to leave for a little cheaper than Monaco wanted, as long as they got a preference clause on Deivid Washington. That means that when any club made an offer for the forward, Monaco would have to be informed and would have the right to match it.

When Chelsea made their bid for Deivid Washington, the Ligue 1 side were notified, and made their offer, with the youngster choosing the Blues anyway. The problem is that according to journalist Jorge Nicola, the French club have offered €1m more than the Blues.

It’s said that Santos now need to work a way around it. One possibility is to convince the Stamford Bridge side to pay a million more.

Otherwise, Monaco can complain to FIFA and that would cause the Brazilian side some problems.

Nicola claims that Chelsea’s bid for Deivid Washington is worth €15m plus €5m in bonuses. That extra fee is triggered if the Blues qualify, at least once, for the Champions League in the next five years.
