A new setback in Chelsea’s pursuit for Enzo Fernandez is now reported by the Portuguese media.

According to Mais Futebol, the Blues have backed down and no longer want to trigger the midfielder’s €120m release clause.

Chelsea had previously put even more on the table for the transfer, but in these latest talks, the club chose to take a step back in the negotiations.

Mais Futebol says that Benfica will continue to demand €120m to let Fernandez go. Even though the player missed training sessions and is keen on leaving for the Blues, they’re not giving any discounts.

It’s still unclear how the Eagles will react to his recent attitude, and with manager Roger Schmidt speaking to the press on Thursday, he should bring a few more details on their next steps.

The Portuguese media had already reported that despite Jorge Mendes’ meeting with Chelsea in London on Tuesday night, there had been no agreement for the player’s sale. Benfica’s demands were very well known, so it seems it’s really the Blues who gave up on paying that price.
