Manchester United are ‘still pushing’ to sign Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting this month as they search for a striker.

That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who says the German side are working to get the forward signed to a new deal at the Allianz Arena.

Choupo-Moting is set to become a free agent in the summer when his current deal expires but Bayern are keen for him to extend his stay after the 33-year-old’s impressive performances this season.

He has shone in the absence of Robert Lewandowski, scoring six and assisting two in 10 Bundesliga games and adding another three goals in four games in the Champions League.

That form has earned him attention from around Europe, with several sides thought to be keen on a move and exploring the possibility of getting him cheap this month or on a free in the summer.

Manchester United are one of them, with Erik ten Hag keen to add a striker to his squad, particularly after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure opened up space in the finances.

Plettenburg confirms they are interested and ‘still pushing for a transfer’ to happen this month if they can.

They need to hope that Bayern can’t convince the player to sign a new deal at the club, with a first meeting between Hasan Salihamidzic and the player’s representatives and his father taking place today.

He describes those as ‘good talks’ but there will be no fast decision from the player as he does not want to be a backup next season.

It is presumably that doubt that Manchester United are currently looking to take advantage of, with their interest still there and efforts for him not yet over.
