The Jordan Veretout to AS Saint-Étienne story is starting to turn into a bit of a mess, with mixed signals being sent left, right and centre by the French press.
On Thursday, the Ligue 1 club’s manager, Christophe Galtier appeared to confirm an interest from their end for the Aston Villa midfielder, even admitting to have met the player, but in quotes relayed by L’Equipe on Friday, he seems to be distancing himself from the situation.
The French newspaper look at the club’s current transfer window, and confirm what Mohamed Bouhafsi reported a couple of days ago: the deal is directly linked to the Europa League tie against Beitar Jerusalem before making a solid decision.
This means very little should be done before the 25th of August, at the earliest, and considering Galtier is quoted as saying ‘he doesn’t necessarily offer a profile that is different than what we already have’.
It’s all a bit confusing, but the interest is clearly there. It seems to be just a case of ‘do we really need an extra midfielder for the coming season?’
