In July, French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Djibril Sidibe was Arsene Wenger’s transfer priority. The 24 year old right back, who can also play on the left, moved from Lille to AS Monaco during the last summer transfer window, but Arsenal’s interest was reported before the switch took place.

Sidibe was seen as a player who could provide quality options to Hector Bellerin at right back, and of course fill in on the left should he be needed. Starting for France on Monday night against the Netherlands, Sidibe could have provided serious competition to Bellerin.

Speaking to the French media over the weekend, and covered by L’Equipe on Tuesday, the Monaco player said he was “really on the verge” of joining Arsenal last summer, but the approach came late, and he ended up sticking with the Monaco plan.

Arsenal would have to present Monaco with a good profit on the deal to seal a transfer, but the player clearly sounds keen.

However, he would want a fair chance at getting games, and isn’t interested in a bench role. Perhaps an insurance policy in case Hector Bellerin’s Barca DNA starts causing itches.
